Pentax K100 Firmware Update

posted Friday, February 17, 2012 at 10:58 PM EST

PK_Tether--the unofficial tethering solution for Pentax SLRs--has just been updated to a new version, we hear today.

Created by Polish programmer Tomasz Kos, and originally known as 'Pentax Kx Periodic Shooting', PK_Tether has been on the scene for a little over a year now.

As its earlier name suggests, PK_Tether was first created specifically with the Pentax K-x in mind. It's grown a lot since then, though, and now provides support for many Pentax K-series DSLRs. (Only the *ist series, K100D, K100D Super, K110D, K-m / K2000 and 645D aren't supported by the program.) While it doesn't provide live view capability, since Pentax's own, now-discontinued tethering solution never offered this, it does allow for remote shooting including direct access to a broad selection of exposure controls.

The new release is PK_Tether v0.6.4, which makes a number of changes. The shutter release functionality has been redesigned to avoid bugs with interval shooting in Bulb mode, and the program will no longer allow more than seven frames to be buffered at any given time. There's also a new function to group shots in folders by capture date, and the debug options have been moved into the menu system, rather than having dedicated buttons in the PK_Tether interface. Aamva format.

More details and the download can be found on the PK_Tether website!

I have just bought a Pentax K100D DSLR. There was no memory card with it so I purchased Scandisk 64GB SDXC card. I fitted the card and turned on the camera and just got 'memory card error' come up on the screen. So being new to this type of camera I returned to Argos to get a replacement card, I spoke to a member of staff who is their 'technical guy' who said that the card was incorrect for the camera, and suggested a Scandisk 32GB SDHC card, this I purchased and fitted it in the shop with the same results 'memory card error'. He then looked up the Pentax/Ricoh website and suggested downloading an upgrade of the firmware for the camera, from version 1 to version 1.02. I have tried to download this upgrade but without success, can anyone help please. P.S I did try an old 32Mb card and the camera worked why is this??

Hi, SD cards work in SDHC readers but not the other way round. Down to the age of the camera when such cards didn't exist. Your camera card slot would also have an upper limit of 32GB I guess.

It's an old camera now though and memory tech has advanced. If the firmware update doesn't help then you'll have to sauce an earlier model/lower spec card.

I've never used such an advanced card with my K100. Try a cheap SD card, I bet it'll work fine once formatted. (You'll get some lovely shots from that old sensor. Best wishes,
Andrew

Get yourself a cheap 4GB or 8GB SDHC card, use that for the update and keep as a spare once you've got the other one working. Chris
